dead-end road

"If you go looking for a friend, you're going to find they're very scarce. If you go out to be a friend, you'll find them everywhere" - Zig Ziglar

Today I was walking down the road past my pottery studio. I had wanted a nice place to walk near my pottery studio, yet I had never continued walking down the same road my pottery studio is on. When I finally did, after ~4 months at this pottery studio, I found a lovely dead-end road.

After reaching the end, surrounded by trees and houses bathed in afternoon sunlight, I saw a woman step out of her house. She was sort of round and had straight brown hair and glasses. She had a warm southern accent and a laugh that went on for longer than you’d expect it to. She had her son with her, who also had long brown hair and glasses.

I didn’t have a good reason to be on this dead-end road, so I extended a friendly hello. She said hello back, and I was relieved.

I walked a few more steps down the road, and then she asked me, "Hey, do you need a kitten fix?"

“Of course, always,” I responded, so she showed me four kittens asleep under a table in her yard. Three were jet black, and one was white with a faintly gray tail.

We talked about the huge barn owls that live next to her house and other fauna in the area, then an Amazon truck pulled up and delivered a package. “This must be the chicken mask,” she said. Her son was going to be a chicken for Halloween, she explained.

After I thanked her for welcoming me to see her new kittens and started to leave, I heard, “Your chicken mask is here!” shouted into the house.

There are so many worlds within our world. At the gym this morning, I ended up chatting with an artist for over an hour about travel, artist life, etc… next I went to the supermarket and ran into two neighbors and their newborn son, next I went to the studio and had my kitten encounter, then taught a pottery lesson at a hip brewery in town, then met old and new friends at an afrobeats dance class. I guess this is just a day in the life, but it’s like, days like this feel years long.

Whoever built that dead-end road had no idea their road would one day answer a girl’s prayer. You were once someone’s prayer, and you will be again, don’t forget that!

All the best,

Liliana

P.S. I didn’t have time to research pottery traditions but I can do that for next week. Am still making goblets, and they’re getting better. Progress!

Hello friends and citizens of LIL republic! It has been like a month since my last newsletter, and for that I apologize – I did a lot of resting (and getting the flu) and traveling over the holidays, but now I am back in the pocket. So, updates: LOOK AT WHAT IM WORKING ON: She is the prototype/the first in a series of pieces that I throw on the wheel as a closed form, in the shape of a matryoshka/Russian nesting doll, then I sculpt with this phrase in mind: “She is creating the landscape of...
